The Wonders of Nature series was inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi (1181 - 1226). St. Francis was a Catholic friar who gave up a life of wealth and privilege to live a life of devotion to God. He established the Franciscan Order of friars and the women's Order of the Poor Ladies. Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1228, just two years after his death. Along with Saint Catherine of Siena, he was designated patron saint of Italy.
St. Francis was famous for his love of animals and nature. He has also become known as the patron saint of animals and the natural environment, and it is common for churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on or near his feast day of October 4th.
The two sides of this Wonders of Nature Rosary Card were inspired by the following quotes by St. Francis:
“Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.”
-- St. Francis of Assisi
“Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens, you have made them bright, precious and fair.”
-- St. Francis of Assisi
