The Origin of the Miraculous Medal

On November 27, 1830, a French nun named Catherine Labouré received a vision and a request from the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sister Catherine was absorbed in her evening meditations when Our Lady appeared to her in a vision and revealed the design for a medallion. On the front was an image of the Blessed Virgin standing on a globe with rays of light coming from her hands. Framing her appeared the words, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

As Sister Catherine watched, the medallion rotated, forming an oval surrounded by twelve stars. Within the circle of stars she described a symbol: "I beheld the letter ‘M’ surmounted by a cross, at the foot of the cross, a bar, and below all, the Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns, and the Heart of Mary pierced with a sword."

She heard a voice say, "Have a medal struck after this model," and she understood that it was meant to be a safeguard against the powers of darkness, and that all those who carried this symbol would receive great graces.

The Miraculous Medal design was executed by Adrien Vachette based on Saint Catherine Labouré's visions.

After two years of deliberation by Church authorities, the Miraculous Medal of Our Lady of Graces was struck exactly as Our Lady prescribed. Within a short time the medal was being worn by millions.

Sister Catherine remained unknown to the world during her lifetime, and her role in bringing the Miraculous Medal to the faithful was not revealed until after her death in 1876. She was canonized Saint Catherine Labouré in 1947 by Pope Pius XII. Today her body lies incorruptible in the small chapel where the Blessed Virgin first appeared to her.

“O Lord, Who givest us all things through the Immaculate Mother of Thy Son: grant us by the aid of this mighty Mother to escape the dangers of this time, and come to life everlasting.”
